Finance Minister Nicola Willis has announced a significant $577 million top-up to New Zealand’s screen production grant in the upcoming Budget. The funding will support the country’s film rebate scheme, which offers international productions a 20–25% rebate on spending in New Zealand.
Willis highlighted the economic impact of the scheme, noting that nearly $7.5 billion has been invested into the country’s economy by inbound productions over the past decade, supported by $1.5 billion in rebates.
Since a 2023 review, ten major international productions have chosen New Zealand as their filming location—including A Minecraft Movie and Taika Waititi’s upcoming Klara and the Sun.
The decision underscores the Government’s commitment to keeping New Zealand competitive in the global film market, even amidst wider budget constraints.
