The Government has introduced changes to KiwiSaver contribution rates that will take effect on 1 April 2026, with another increase planned for 1 April 2028. These changes are designed to help New Zealanders grow their retirement savings over time.
Contribution Rate Increase from 1 April 2026
From 1 April 2026, the default KiwiSaver contribution rate will increase from 3% to 3.5% for both employees and employers.
If you are currently contributing at 3%, your employer will update their payroll system to apply the new 3.5% rate automatically. The new rate will apply to all paydays from 1 April 2026, even if the pay period covers days before and after that date.
Temporary Rate Reduction Option
If the increase to 3.5% is difficult financially, you can apply for a temporary rate reduction.
This allows you to continue contributing 3% instead of 3.5% for a limited time.
